TUESDAY, September 7th, 2021 (HealthDay News) – The multi-resistant yeast, Candida auris, can be identified and contained with improved laboratory monitoring and immediate investigation with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) support, according to a study posted on the Internet on Sept. 7 Internal Medicine Annals.
Ellora N. Karmarkar, MD, of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and colleagues examined the prevalence of C. auris and IPC practices in three long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) and 14 ventilated qualified care facilities (vSNFs) for adult patients in 2019 in Orange County, California.
The first case of C. auris was identified in a patient in an LTACH in February 2019. The researchers found that initial point prevalence surveys (PPS) in 17 facilities had 44 patients C. auris in three LTACHs and six vSNFs (100 and 43 percent, respectively); the first bloodstream infection was reported in May 2019. A total of 182 patients with C. auris were identified through serial PPSs and discharge tests by October 2019. All 81 isolates sequenced were class III and highly related. The assessment of the IPC identified gaps in hand hygiene, precautionary measures due to carryovers and environmental cleaning. By October 2019, the outbreak was contained in two facilities.
