Here’s what Dr. Sushma Tomar shared about the health tests we need to have throughout our lives depending on the age or stage of life we are in.
Must-do health checks between 20-30 years old:
Why: At this point in your life you might think I’m young and healthy, so why would I see a doctor? Well you must, because there are many diseases like
weight control –We understand that weight can be a trigger for most people, but it’s important to keep weight under control, especially from a young age. Being overweight and obese can put you at risk for many diseases, including heart attack and blood pressure.
blood pressure test – To make sure your heart (including your arteries), brain, eyes, and kidneys are working properly, a blood pressure test can help a doctor understand any associated risks or problems.
cholesterol profile – If you are at low risk of cardiovascular disease, a cholesterol profile is highly recommended. People with a family history of heart disease and children with obesity and diabetes should have their cholesterol levels checked more frequently.
Pelvic exam and Pap These are extremely important for every woman as they protect you from cancer and diseases that can lead to infertility. Pap tests should begin at age 21, and it is recommended that they be done every three years until age sixty. Women ages 30 to 65 who have a routine Pap test with negative HPV test screening can have these tests every five years. Sexually active women ages 24 and younger also need STD testing and HIV screening. If there is a family history of breast cancer, mammograms should only be done after consulting a doctor, as exposure to radiation at this age is not recommended.
