Marta E. Mitchell, 68, of Erie, PA, died on February 14, 2022 after a tough battle with cancer.
Marta was born on 7/6/53 to Zdzislaw and Emilia Zychowicz in Syracuse, NY. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and human services from Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, and fondly recalled her days there with the Kujawiaki Polish Dance Ensemble.
Upon graduation, Marta embarked on a long and successful career in Human Resources, most recently holding the title of VP of HR at Lakeshore Communities in Erie, PA, where she was incredibly passionate about her mission and built a wonderful and supportive working family.
After college, Marta settled in Cambridge Springs, PA, where she married William Mitchell in 1975 and raised two sons, Jason and Michael – her pride.
Widowed in 2011, Marta moved to Erie, PA and made a wonderful life of living by the motto “everything happens for a reason” and making a conscious effort to make the best of every situation. Marta loved good music, especially AC/DC, a good stout or martini, shopping, traveling and was a real cat lover. She has been an active and proud voice in suicide prevention and vulvar cancer awareness groups. But most of all, Marta loved her family. Her favorite times were spent visiting her two sons, her wives and her two grandchildren and laughing with them.
Marta was preceded in death by her parents, Zdzislaw and Emilia Zychowicz, and her husband, William Mitchell. She is survived by her sons Jason (Kelly) Mitchell of Erie, PA and Michael (Sarah) Mitchell of Chicago IL and her two grandsons Merritt and Levi Mitchell; Brother, Edward (Shannon) Zychowicz and sister Regina (Keith) Morris and many nieces and nephews on both the Zychowicz and Mitchell sides of the family.
At Marta’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service at this time – the family will notify loved ones as a celebration of life is planned in the future. Instead, in honor of February, which is Vulvar Cancer Awareness Month, please educate yourself and donate to the Foundation of Women’s Cancer (
