Jesse Lingard scored two goals for West Ham last night, making an impressive debut.
Lingard’s performance received applause from Manchester United players on social media.
Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire were among those who congratulated Lingard, while loanee players Diego Dalot and Tahith Chong and former teammate Timothy Fosu-Mensah also responded.
Lingard’s performance was a reminder that he’s too good to sit on the bench.
In the first half of the season, Lingard often didn’t get that far and often didn’t make it into United’s squad on matchday.
It is important for his career that he play again. Lingard might even have a chance of making the 2021 squad with England, especially if he continues to play like this.
His two goals against Aston Villa helped put Jack Grealish in his place and was a reminder that he has so much more to offer.
Lingard has always been a noticeably popular player on the United squad and the player reaction to his eye-catching debut underscores this.
Does Lingard have a future together?
Ultimately, it’s up to Lingard and what he wants. Does he see the West Ham loan as a simple “means to an end” to get back into the English squad?
Or is he looking for something longer-term? At this point, he’s probably open-minded and that would be a sensible move.
Lingard is a win if he plays like that, but if he stayed at United next season he would still be behind Bruno Fernandes in the pecking order.
As much as he loves United, it will be difficult for him to get back on the sidelines after getting a taste of the regular action.
