DUI Accident That Leads Injured Kids To Jail Time | News, Sports, Jobs

HOLLIDAYSBURG — An Altoona woman reported Friday to the Blair County Jail to serve a two to five-year sentence for an October 2020 DUI accident that injured two children.

Jennifer L. Lansberry, 37, who recently pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault by a vehicle while DUI, two counts of endangerment of child welfare and related offenses, returned to court Friday for a reconciliation hearing before beginning her prison sentence.

Since one of the injured children was flown by helicopter to Pittsburgh and treated for a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage, significant compensation was expected from Lansberry. Police described the other child’s injuries as minor.

Without documentation of the medical bills, President Elizabeth Doyle said she would only direct Lansberry to pay victims’ expenses for bills that aren’t covered by insurance or otherwise settled.

Defense attorney Russ Montgomery told Doyle that Lansberry’s insurance provider could cover up to $30,000 for victims’ medical costs.

Assistant District Attorney Justin Shickman told Doyle he suspects medical bills in the case could exceed $1 million. He said he spoke to the children’s mother, who said neither she nor her children had health insurance.

He said the mother also spoke of being charged $75,000 each for two medical helicopter flights and filing for bankruptcy in light of the other bills.

The mother did not take part in the reparation hearing on Friday.

Altoona Police arrested Lansberry on October 17, 2020 after she was directed to the 3000 block of Beale Avenue, where she encountered a utility pole. The two children, both aged 7, were in the back seat of the vehicle.

Police said Lansberry appeared impaired at the scene and smelled of alcohol.

Lansberry also couldn’t explain how her car hit the pole. After police found a vape pen in the vehicle, she told them she had a medical marijuana ID card.

Lansberry will be eligible for the state drug treatment program based on the sentence imposed.
