LOS ANGELES, June 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – The American Medical Association, Inc. (CAP) today announced the resignation of Cindy Belcher, Chief Operating Officer, effective August 6, 2021.

Ms. Belcher is stepping down from her role after two decades of building the organization’s business development and membership service functions, along with overseeing various operational departments of the company. Hammon Acuna rises to the role of CAP COO to replace her. Alyson Lewis, JD, CPCU is being promoted to replace Ms. Belcher as President and COO of the Cooperative of American Physicians Insurance Company, Inc. (CAPIC), a Hawaii-based subsidiary of CAP that AM Best has awarded an A- (Excellent) was rated.

Ms. Belcher has been instrumental in overseeing and advancing membership development, membership services, and practice administration services for CAP, as well as the company’s marketing and communications, underwriting, and human resources departments. She also held executive responsibility for CAP Physicians Insurance Agency, Inc., which provides CAP’s 12,000 members with the full line of insurance products beyond the company’s professional indemnity coverage, as well as CAPAssurance, a risk buying group that provides CAP’s unique brand of medical protection Medical malpractice for large medical groups, hospitals and health care facilities.

Mr. Acuna, currently Senior Vice President and Chief Membership Officer, will take over Ms. Belcher’s portfolio as CAP’s new Chief Operating Officer, along with responsibility for the company’s Risk Management and Patient Safety departments. He has led all of CAP’s business development and membership service functions since 2015. After joining CAP in 2007, Mr. Acuna brings a proven track record of more than 30 years in the medical professional liability industry with a broad range of expertise in marketing, sales, loyalty and customer / member services. Prior to joining CAP, Mr. Acuna worked for 18 years at SCPIE Holdings, Inc., which was later acquired by Doctors Company, where he served as Vice President of Marketing. He holds a BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MBA from California State University, Northridge.

Ms. Lewis joined CAP in 2016 as Senior Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer. She will continue to be responsible for overseeing the underwriting functions of the entire CAP company and will now assume full leadership responsibility for all of CAPAssurance’s business development; along with her promotion to her new role as CAPIC President and COO. Prior to CAP, Ms. Lewis was Vice President & Hospital Professional Liability Product Manager at Ironshore Insurance and senior underwriting positions at Zurich North America and Chubb Executive Risk. Ms. Lewis received her BA from the University of Southern California and her JD from Concord Law School.

Mr. Acuna and Ms. Lewis will both report to CAP CEO Scher.
